Constituent Assembly of 1988

The Constituent Assembly of 1988 was assembled in February 1987, with the mission of creating a new constitution that guarantees democracy, as well as civil, political, and social rights for all Brazilians, following a long period of violence during the authoritarian regime from 1964 to 1985. The assembly was held in the National Congress in Brasilia for 20 months, where elected senators and deputies from across the country, representing different parties and ideologies, were brought together in congress, setting aside their differences to develop new laws that provide justice for all, defining Brazil’s path towards progress.
At SALMUN, delegates will relive this significant moment, engaging in diplomatic discussions and facing crucial dilemmas, for instance, how to balance change and continuity. With that, they must determine which reforms are necessary and what values and structures should be preserved in order to maintain stability, balance, and further development of the democratic republic.
