United Nations Economic and Financial Affairs Council

The Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) is one of the main committees of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), created in 1945 to promote international economic stability, sustainable development, and financial cooperation among member states.
Composed of all 193 UN members, ECOFIN provides a platform for nations to discuss and coordinate responses to global financial challenges. Although its resolutions are non-binding, they hold significant moral and political influence, guiding international organizations such as the IMF and the World Bank.
In SALMUN XX (2025), ECOFIN will debate two critical topics: the economic and financial effects of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the regulation of cryptocurrency to prevent financial crime. Delegates must balance development and stability, fostering diplomacy and cooperation to achieve fair, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth worldwide.
